When someone is feeling emotionally constricted, the depth and fullness of being alive is limited. Happiness and joy may be present yet stunted. Fear and anger are present, yet not effectively communicated.
Emotional constriction can develop out of various scenarios and circumstances. Similar to trauma, there may be triggers inviting constriction. People, memories, the sound of a particular song, and on and on. In many cases the emotional constriction may be in temporary service to our wellbeing. Not unlike the 'fight or flight' dynamic that we all experience from time to time. In temporary service.
'In temporary service' to our wellbeing is an important consideration. If we emotionally constrict for a brief period of time, it may very well be an effective coping mechanism. If we remain constricted for prolonged periods of time, far beyond what the particular trigger indicated, then this begins to impact our quality of life. Our communications may be vague, our affect not fully expressive, and our desire to engage with others limited. All these have an impact on the quality of our lives.
When one is feeling constricted, this implies a tightness, a tenseness, perhaps even an 'on edgeness'.
Relaxation can be an important tool to address this chipping away at the quality of life. It is possible for someone only mildly impacted by their emotional constriction to ease themselves out of this emotional prison through generating a routine of shifting into Deep Calm. Once in that space, acknowledging and accepting their emotional experience as a basic part of being human can have a significant and beneficial impact.
For those who's emotional constriction is of a more chronic nature, outside assistance may be indicated. This could include therapy, body work, developing a relationship with a mentor or personal coach, or working with a Relaxationist.
A Relaxationist would become familiar with the case, create a guided relaxation script, and ease the client into a deep state of Calm. In that state of mind, the emotions that are under constriction would be addressed, normalized, and identified as an important part of living a deep and complete life. One session may be enough, though sometimes several and even a 'booster' down the road is indicated.
Yes, Deep Relaxation can help shift a person out of emotional constriction and into a more satisfying life.
